In an effort to close this issue, I present the following observations based on a Windows 11 operating system:

    1. I would NOT expect files created in the newer version of an application to be opened by an older version of the application.
    2. With affinity just update the older version. Its free.
    3. Those users that work with Affinity through a corporate system should be able to meet with whomever controls their system to insure that all corporate users are always up to date. Note that this is somewhat irrelevant since if you aren't updated than you don't have files created by a newer version. Of course, if you have a different computer at home on which you keep updated programs and you want to bring those files to work, there will no doubt be a compatability problem.

    Thanks for everyone's input.

This has been a circular discussion. Clearly, one should spend the extra 15 seconds to update the second or third, etc. machine to the current verson. If you are on a corporated linked machine, than corporate should have the intellegence to make sure all machines are updated; not difficult.

However, I do expect that the files made with my 3.0 version to be compatible with the 3.3 version. Just my opinon.

R C - R. Thanks, I will explore those options. You are right. Clip to Canvas was enabled. I will unclip it. I did modify the text so that an Ariel text, with a font size of 12 was part of a "New Style". No luck. Note that under some "remembered confituration" the text did appear and was red. But it was correct. I haven't been able to replicate what I did. But the night is young! Thanks again

I took a JPEG photo as the Affinity reponder suggested, right clicked it, went to the "Convert to Image Resource" option, selected it and the rest occured as I indicated. Don't know this is only possible in Windows. The full text of the Affinity reponse is below.

    Hi David,

    Thanks for your reply.

How are you trying to apply the caption, via the Layer>Add Caption option? If thats correct, try this, right click on the image on the canvas and select 'Convert To Image Resource'. Once you've done that, now click on the Layer menu along the top and Add Caption will now be active and you'll be able to add a caption to the image. If you are trying to add a caption another way, please let me know which method you are using and i'll be able to help further.

Many Thanks, Gareth @ Affinity Support

I use Windows 11.0 and with 3.1, my Captions option is greyed out. I contacted Affinity Studio and received may good approaches as follows:

So, I clicked on the image and selected "Convert to Image Resource". The caption area showed up below the image, as I had selected. However, The caption that I typed in the dialog box where the (Figure) and (Alt Text) options are, did not show up. I also had to make sure that I chose the "Figure" layer in the Layers panel.

The suggestion from Affinity was to put -0.27 in the "Vertical Offset" option in the Dialog box.

Good luck. It is still flawed, though. Elaine Giles has an excellect long tutorial, entiled 3.1, a Deep Dive. She has a whole section on "Captions"

The opions expressed by others on this topic generally match mine. I do, however, have some response comments:

    1. Canva spent a good sum of money to buy Serif. Most businesses want to be number 1 in sales and that may also having to be number 1 in quality. The ONLY reason Adobe should be in the conversation is that users(i.e. Buyers) may have expressed a desire for programs to offer certain tools or processes to make their work, easier, faster and/or better. These "better" ideas could be with other programs, not just Adobe. So, my answer is NO
    2. New programs or a major revamping of an existing program ALWAYS result in initial bugs. How quickly fixes are installed will go a long way in deciding overall reliability. Affinity 2.65 is pretty reliabile in my opinion and I expect 3.0 to reach that level of reliability by the end of the year. No, my answer is NO.

In addition to putting the Pixel Studio first, if you open V3 with an existing file that is Vector based, like drawings, V3 will automatically switch the Studio to Vector. With no specific file, it will open as you last changed it, i.e. with the Pixel Studio highlighted. No question that V3 requiries a learning curve of some depth!

I don't think this is a bug. Leave your Vector Studio on, put your Pixel Studio first, reading from left to right, exit Affinity, come back in and your Pixel Studio should be highlighted, with your presets and panel locations the way you had them when you exited. I use Windows 11.0, but it "should" be the same for a MAC.
