You could just have some fun creating your own!

Source an image with the colours you want.. | download it!
Go to Swatches Panel. use the panel context dropdown then select 'Create Palette from Image'.....I do this constantly
add a Document panel or Application Panel
set how many swatches you need

    HI
mm interesting...sort of but you need to use the constraints panel..which is a bit of a mystery!....it is sort of a poor version of 'flex'...but you can use it to create something like what you are asking. By fixing the text box relative to its parent. The text panels have fill and border colour capacity

    a. Need 2 objects (A text frame + a rectangle)

    b. place the text object inside the rectangle (a container)..just drag inside in layers panel

c Open or source the Contraints Panel [Window>vector.Constraints]

If you select the text frame and the deselect the inner arrows within the constaints panel you can move the outer rectangle around but the text remains fixed..or tagged to a border depending on the lines that are selected

There is a video here which may help you

You can rescale the rectangle and the text frame separately and relative to each other. text frame can be coloured from teh text frame and the rectange..well just coloured (Fill and Stroke)

    A better tutorial

This will give you some insight into how the constraint panel works on parent/Child objects

    ldina Nice Reply!

tinyjames I was thinking about this scenario...
If you have a rectangle on the screen (In this case identified by a selection) To paint in the maner you require can be conducted in the Layers Panel

    Just add 2 pixel layers
Select the rectangle area you want to paint with (Control Click to activate shape)
move to Pixel layer 01 and create a mask in the layers panel

    Deselect
Use a tool to select the outside area or background or select the rectangle again; then invert the selection

Move to Pixel layer 02 and create a mask

You should then be able to switch between the layers and paint the area you want... a bit like this very basic file

Sort of depends which tool you use for the selection. As @Idina mentioned you can add/remove selections with the 'Freehand Selection Tool'

Also with the 'Freehand selection Tool' holding down SHIFT will add to your selection; holding down ALT will remove from you current selection

with the 'Flood Select Tool' holding down shift will add to your current selection

If using separate layers: Control+Shift will select each element present on the layers

With the 'Selection Brush Tool' you can just shift click different px elements (even on different layers) and set it to ADD or SUBTRACT also as @Idina suggested

    Control+D deselects

    Switching to the Move Tool with objects selected gives you the option of right click menu where you can do other 'stuff' like convert to curves, Move selection into a layer;

you can use the selections to paint...and illustrate like in this video:

I think I'm on the right track now thank you stuartRc but how can I hide my ants but so the affect still works. every time I try to hide the ants I lose the affect

    James

Hi I was wondering that myself while working though your questions...I thought it was CONTRL+H but in Affinity Studio it is View>Show>Pixel Selection...I just did not have a key assigned to it!... I assigned SHIFT+H ot it in settings (updated instructions!:))

    Hi

It can be confusing locating the tools you need to mimic a PSD tutorial. They are still extremely useful but frustrating when you don't know where all the tools are.🙂

I worked through the first part of this for you:

    The Photoshop Tutorial (Part 1)

    a. A Black outline shape with figure on white background
    b. Select the outside area (White)
    c. Inverse to fill shape with dark cyan colour
    d. invert to select background and fill with black

Part 2 Fine tune neck! (you could just use the selection tools ..freehand selection to select the head and drag down a bit..deleting some of the neck prior to doing this to create a small working space)

    In Affinity studio
The tools are not always identical or available on the obvious menus or studios

    Need something to work with
You can find something else or use the tutorial files or download the colouring book!
    1. Get a creature from Monster Club Colouring book (here) There is a lot to play around with here

    2. Create A4 page without an artboard (so just white A4 sheet) Choose an image select and copy to blank file Place the drawing into seperate file and save it
3 All these file are vector but we really just need a base to work with. (the filled bit). isolate it and add a 1px back line. Convert to Raster (px) [Right click on layer and rasterise]

4.make a copy Control+J to duplicate (turn off the lower layer) so you have something to go back to if it goes wrong
    Now we have a file:

Or you could just use these files!

    Tutorial
    Using the Attached files
    1. A Affinity Studio file as a template for you to edit to simplify things. (Import the AS Studio file and work inside it)

    2. A Custom Studio (tutorial.afstudio) which you can import with the tools you need to fabricate this PSD tutorial

    3. A Graphite Palette with custom grey swatches

    Notes:
The equivalent of the magic wand is the flood select tool but there are other tools you can use to simplify things

    A. Select the outline raster working layer (red tag) in layers panel select the Flood Select Tool(W) from the tool panel (Like PSD)
    B. Click on the background area of the page. This should select the background area

or you can Control + Click the actual layer to get the same effect in AStudio

    C. Then all you need to do is invert the selection

    Invert selection
This is in several locations but best used from the pixel studio or the custom studio provided

Invert option is on the Pixel Menu (Pixel>Pixel Selection>INVERT) or you can use the keys [Control+Shift+I]
OR and much simpler! I added a block of icons to the custom Studio (last 3 to the top toolbar)which has an invert button!

To fill your shapes (Inner dark cyan and outer background Black) just toggle the invert selection and use the Flood Fill Tool (make sure you have a fill colour! dark cyan in PSD tutorial)

You can hide/show the selection with View>Show>Pixel Selection (I had to set a shortcut for this one)

Not using a Mac but could also check

Number of fonts installed....this was an issue a long time ago!
Number of brush sets and assets

Hardware acceleration as @Idina has suggested

    Lower Ram usage
    Lower undo levels
    4K monitors

There is a link on the old Forum discussing these type of issues

    here

Yes, it is available when you rotate the donut with the rotation handle, but not available when you rotate, or set the angle using the red dots, no info about what angle you are on, until you release the mouse, and look to the above toolbar

Ah Ok I see what you mean now!...🙂

Yep not sure there is direct solution for that. You can click in the field on the context bar and then use the arrow keys to set the value..

Yes, i saw it, there you can control the angle. What i miss is the little box informing the angle you are on while rotating. It is a "live streaming" information, as when you use the rotate handlers:
The content cannot be displayed because you do not have authorisation to view this content.

Is it missing?...I just checked on my confoguration and it displays as I rotate. not sure whether you can turn it off....maybe Tooltips in Settings/User interface

The donut thing is great! But it dont informs you in realtime the angle you are on, as when you are rotating an object, or at least i can see that information, that in this case is very usefull.

have a look on the context bar at top of page. Their are options to control precisely the size and position of the segment on the imaginery circle. You can also make some adjustment with the Transform panel

Hi Stuart, thanks your tips, very good ones!
Im not quite sure about the second tip, how to do that.

Said that... still the Inkscape simplify is very missed. The way they implemented it -being able to simplify very finely or not- is good. Scanned hand drawings appreciate it very much.

    Ok! No problem....

    a. Draw your vector with either the peb or pencil tool..So you have something to work with
    b. Select your pencil tool or reselect it. On the top context bar their is an icon labelled 'Toggle Scuplt Mode'..It is next to the wavy line one...
    c. with your current or first vector selected zoom in abit if needed but them just hower over existing line and try to redraw it...If you have a scribbly line with lots of vectors..the Sculpt mode will redraw it with less nodes...usually!

    This is a common issue.
I use inkscape to simplify vector curves and even simplify raster to vector conversions..It works well except for the fact that simplify in Inkscape converts all the nodes to sharp nodes. Simplify in Inkscape works much better than Affinity. . The Path Effects (CNTRL+&) and Simplify has more control but does not like complex objects

The simplify or 'smooth node' capability sort of works in Affinity but tends to add additional nodes.. It can also crash with complex objects and for me commonly stalls the app.

There are a couple of options available bur these can slow down your sketching/drawing:

    1. Make greater use of the pencil tool for drawing vector shapes. so you can make used of the 'Curve Fitting Smoothness' option (Wavy line btn and slider) or set this to 60-80% when working. Reduce the nunber of nodes with high values!
    2. Draw your shape and then use 'Sculpt Mode' to simplfy the path (i.e redraw your existing path with pencil tool). This can simplify the path
    3. Use the stabilizer when drawing but set the rope distance low say 5 or 10

There is a huge Collection here that you will find useful
