Handwriting coming through other side on scanned images of handwritten text

  • Hi there,

I am cleaning up some scans of a handwritten journal. The lines are pale pink. The problem is, the handwriting is coming through from the other side of the page (it's cheap paper) and when I use the levels and toggle the black and white levels, I lose the pink lines.

Does anyone have any tips on how to deal with this, ie how to lose the 'ghost' handwriting coming through from the other side, while keeping the pink lines?

    Thank you muchly!

  • Welcome here! 🙂

When paper is thin, it helps to put a strong white paper over it before scanning.
However if it's already scanned, this option is probably out of scope.

If the 'ghost' handwriting is not the same colour as the lines you want to keep, there are some tools to be more selective about colours than BW levels.

It would help us to help you if you could post here some sample page (if possible in a zip file so the forum engine will not modify it).

  • sazzle When doing things like this, it is critical to decide what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of. That suggests which tools may be most appropriate.

You wanted to keep the pink (magenta) and lose the very light grays. To me, that suggested an HSL Adjustment to boost the magenta and a Selective Color to boost the whites (i.e., lose the lightest grays). I added a Curves adjustment as a final tweak to the white (you can also use Levels). Here's a sample, including the Layers in the Layers Panel.

To keep the file size small, I'm also uploading a reduced size AF file (Affinity v3.2.3). This file is very low quality, low resolution, but you can copy and paste the three Adjustment Layers into your full sized document to preserve the original quality. Or, just look at the adjustments I made and do something similar in your own document.
