Yes, that is the answer.
To remove the white background, go to the Text Frame panel (Window > Text > Text Frame) and click the Fill color swatch to set it to transparent or remove the fill color entirely.

If you want this setting sticks for each new Text Frames you create, you can go to the Edit menu > Defaults > Syncronize From Selection (that sets it for the current work session) and then Edit menu > Defaults > Save (that's for ever until you change it the same way or reset to factory setting).
P.S. It's always better to do this after creating a new file and changing only what you want to be changed, since it will save all the changes diverging from the current defaults…
