White background on text layer.

    Yes, that is the answer.

    To remove the white background, go to the Text Frame panel (Window > Text > Text Frame) and click the Fill color swatch to set it to transparent or remove the fill color entirely.

  • If you want this setting sticks for each new Text Frames you create, you can go to the Edit menu > Defaults > Syncronize From Selection (that sets it for the current work session) and then Edit menu > Defaults > Save (that's for ever until you change it the same way or reset to factory setting).

    P.S. It's always better to do this after creating a new file and changing only what you want to be changed, since it will save all the changes diverging from the current defaults…
