My most recent illustration of a Cedar Waxwing done with Affinity Studio v3.0.3. Striking bird.
Every winter about this time, flocks of Cedar Waxwings migrate south and are drawn to our Holly tree, which is loaded with thousands of red berries. Waxwings, robins and cardinals gorge themselves on the berries until they strip the tree bare. As the weather warms, the sun converts some of the sugars in the berries to alcohol. When birds (especially robins) eat too many, they get drunk and flop around, (most of us know that feeling), which is hilarious to watch. Robins, in particular, can't seem to "hold their liquor". ![]()
The bird itself was illustrated manually (no vector trace), mostly with vectors, gradients, gradient meshes, etc, and enhanced with pixel based brushes. The background was generated with a Procedural Texture. I got lazy and wanted to finish this illustration, so I used a photo for the tree branch. Hope you like it.
