Do not touch EXIF data

  • I maintain a certain number of .jpg photos of jewelry (thousands) sorted by creation date.

You could add the exif date to the file name by using the great tool Graphic Converter (lemkesoft.de).

    Thanks for reading.

  • In Column View in macOS Finder, you can see the Content Created date (and lots more image metadata) if you enable it in Preview Options:

Alas, if one is running an old macOS version like Catalina like I am, these are the only options for that:

So no image detail or Exif data options at all.

So I just checked my other antique MacBook which can boot as far back as MacOS Leopard:
These options were probably introduced in MacOS Lion – which I have skipped for many reasons at that time – and they were definitely available in Mountain Lion.
If I only knew! It would have saved me literally hundreds of hours while I was searching, cataloging and sorting images and audio files via other 3rd party means… ;(

Minor correction: the video is about revealing options in the list view, not column view.

That said, I knew about the right-click (a.k.a. Control-click) option to reveal more options in the list view but not about the temporary rename folder trick (like to Pictures, Movies, or Music) to get dimensions, duration, codex, & so on columns to appear in that view.

I'm not sure how useful it would ever be for me but it is nice to know it is possible.

Edited once, last by R C-R: Made it more obvious that AFAIK this was about list, not column, view. (January 10, 2026 at 7:22 PM).
